BLUE ANGEL

At the intersection of 38th and Chicago Ave, there is a blue and white angel painted where George Floyd was restrained and killed by by Derek Chauvin. The angel has its arms behind its back in a position of restraint. Underneath the angel, 'I Can't Breathe I Can't Breathe Mama' is written in a white-blue ombre.

STATUES

It’s the people who made it happen. We all take it very special to our hearts to be able to participate in this way. This is a protest, so this is where we as a community come together in protest. We’re protesting right now.

Offerings

Over time, various community members and organizations worked to preserve the objects left at the square, which Jaenella Austin, executive director of the George Floyd Global Memorial, describes as “offerings.” They had about 2,500 in 2020, but now her organization is working to archive up to 10,000, she says.

Everything seemed to be on pause except for the killing of Black bodies. People hit the streets, coming to hold space and grieve, and an organic memorial that became a sacred site of pilgrimage began to grow.
