Event Details

At first we didn’t know what we were coming into. We were not expecting to make friends or have close bonds with people. Participating in this internship made us realize how important community is. Community is us.

We learned that the community is what brings memorials alive. With the community we created with each other, we were able to preserve these memorial offerings so that others could see the impact the greater community had during the uprising.

Over 8 weeks of our summer, we had the privilege of listening to the stories of community members who are connected to the protest. We listened to Ms. Marylin Hill tell us the story of her son Demetrius Hill while we practiced paint consolidation on his mural. Ms. Angela Harrelson told us things about George Floyd that we didn’t know, and Jordan Powell-Karis gave us his story of building the fists. We also went to Memorialize the Movement and the Minnesota African American Museum where we were exposed to more black history. These stories helped us create the exhibit you are experiencing today: Seeing the Unseen Behind the Names.

This exhibit is designed to highlight stories from the 2020 Uprising. We want to bring attention to stories that many people have not yet heard. We want to show other youth that there is more opportunities to have your voices heard. This exhibit is our way of getting our voices heard. We chose the offerings that told the story we wanted to tell. Everyone always says “Say Their Names!” But we questioned the stories and voices behind the names. Welcome to Seeing the Unseen Behind the Names.
